Plastic Surgery Overseas
The opiinon of the French Society of Plastic and Aesthetic surgery
Plastic surgery is a serious medical speciality and patients deserve to be considered as well as digestiv, orthopedical o heart surgery patients.
However, some articles or advertising let people believe that buying a lifting is an ordinary activity , just as buying a kilo of tomatoes or a second-hand car. "Second-hand" .... this is exactly the word adapated to this kind of practice which is nowadays very promoted.
It is necessary to record that:
- no medical operation is mild
- It took us a lot of time to obtain the " patient security" in our own country
Indeed, it took many years to the governemenr and with the help of our Syndicate to fix the rules of Plastic surgery practices. These pieces of work which had required many meetings finally reached their goal with the law of the 2 march of 2002 that specifies the strict rules of this speciality.
This law should be soon accompanied with an Application decree which will put the finishing touch to practical details.
For memory, we record you some of its great principles:
- the choice of a surgeon authorized by the General Medical Council
- the thought period that is at least 15 days
- the possiblity or necessity to see the surgeon several times
- the enlightened consent of the surgeon and precise quote legally defined.
- the surgeon who has operated supports the consequences of the operation
- the insurance and civilian or profesional responsabilty of the surgeon and of the establishement were he exercices
- the surgeon and his establishement are responsible of consequences and eventual after-efects and troubles and this regardless of the kind of operation
Which rules will be observed after coming back from an operation made overseas ?
- How can a surgeon who didn't operate have the right to look after patients operated by another without a subsitution licence or an association contract ?
- How will he/she be payed ?
- Can it be "compérage" or "subordination" ?
- Who takes care of the patient in case of troubles ? The traveller agency insurance or the surgeon's or establishement's insurance , (if there is one) ?
- in case of emergency, Do you know you will have to pay the totality of your staying to the french hospital ( in certain case it can be 15OO€ by day ) because the consequences of plastic surgery are not supported neither by the Healthcare system nor by the mutual insurance companies?
- Is there any " assistance" system who could permit you to be supported in case of trouble for a repatriation in order to be treated in France for free, if your physical condition permit it ?
- Which are the agreements between the overseas clincs and the french hospital in order to reimburse expenses in case of trouble ? Will the family of the patient have to pay the totality of the fees ?
All this remember me bad-quality and fake products you can fine overseas. If they catch you , it can be very expensive.
Talking about Surgery, there is no law which prohibit "fakes" but the consequences can be disastrous for patients. It is expensive and there is no way out.
